Sunderland played more friendlies against Durham and Tyneside opposition, and reached their first Cup Final, going down 2-0 to Tyne Association in the Northumberland and Durham Cup; Tyne were the dominant Tyneside team at the time. Nationally there was still no thought of league football, but Blackburn Olympic broke the "old school" stranglehold on the FA Cup, lifting the trophy with a 2-1 win over Old Etonians.

As there is no report of an AGM at the end of the season, there is no record of the season playing record and therefore no way of knowing if Sunderland played any more than the 11 games for which newspaper reports exist. It is very likely they did play at least one more game, some time between 25th November and 13th January, winning 2-0; The report for the Castle Eden game of 27th January indicates that Sunderland had won their last 3 games, scoring 20 goals and conceding only 1.
