The table shows the position of the clubs when the first class competitions were suspended. The league games involved were declared void and appearances in them do not appear in players official records. Regional league competitions commenced in October 1939, including a North East League featuring 11 local teams. Sunderland, however, declined to enter, one of the reasons being the proximity of Roker Park to the River Wear, which was a target for the German bombers because of its shipbuilding yards. There were only 5 other league teams that declined entry into the regional competitions: Aston Villa, Derby County, Exeter City, Gateshead and Ipswich Town. Sunderland had a slight change of heart later in the season and entered the League War Cup, which began in early 1940, but did not progress far in that competition.
